Electrical Inspections

It is recommended that you have your electrical system inspected yearly, especially if your home is older, as you may have breakers and devices that are near the point of failure that can lead to an electrical fire. Newer homes aren’t without their own safety issues, with the enforcement of AFCI protected circuits, you may have failing breakers or about to fail breakers in even newer homes, as some brands have a tendency to overheat which either leads to a service call and or electrical fire in your panel.

FAQ

You should have a professional check your electrical in your home, as a professional is trained to know what to look for and has the proper tools to test and inspect your electrical system. If you however wish to still inspect it yourself here are some things to look for:

  • Are your devices hot to the touch?
  • Do you smell any unusual smells such as burning?
  • Do you have aluminum wiring?
  • Are your smoke detectors synced to the alarm at the same time?
  • Do you have GFCI protection outside?
  • Do you have GFCI protection near all sources of water?
  • Do your GFCIs work properly?
  • Do you have AFCIs if so do they test and rest properly?
  • Do you have exposed wiring that is not mechanically protected?

If you find any of the above are not as they should be please contact a professional to inspect your home’s electrical further so they can make proper recommendations.

Home inspectors will usually check for reverse polarity and open grounds at every receptacle outlet. As they are not electricians, they do not take cover plates off to check every outlet, this can be a quite time-consuming task and if you are truly looking for such an inspection you should hire an electrical contractor to perform a thorough inspection of all your electrical outlets.
Electrical inspections help make sure your electrical system is safe. Electrical safety inspections make sure to catch failing devices, code and safety infractions so you do have to worry about electrical fires and shocks.
